We are a family business which started some 25 years ago specialising in anything to do with old wood. In the early days it was mainly buying, selling and restoring antique pine and then we were offered 1000 original Victorian doors by a dealer who was closing down, so we became door dealers as well. From there the next logical step was making doors from reclaimed pine to cover the orders that we could not fill from original old door stock. Soon we were making 300 doors a year, all one-offs. Initially we were buying our reclaimed timber, ready sawn and planed to size, from a dealer in Lancashire, but when he retired we struggled to find anyone that would supply us with the quality of wood that we were used to. So we geared up to do our own wood reclamation.
We have bought beams from demolition sites all over the country a 1920s grammar school in Stratford upon Avon, a 1920s sock factory in Ashby de la Zouche, a hotel built in 1893 in Ilfracombe, a primary school in North Wales, built around 1900, a cotton mill in Burnley, built in 1840, a hospital in Bodmin, built in 1820, a blanket factory in Witney, built around the 1920s, a brewery in Northumberland, built in 1860 and so on.
We collect from site and transport it (under cover) to our unit in Devon where we de-nail it, saw it, and machine it to whatever our requirements are i.e. for flooring, for doors, for furniture or for other joinery shops. As you will have noticed we were now producing flooring from reclaimed pine. No sooner had we started supplying reclaimed pine flooring when we were being asked if we supplied oak as well. So we went into oak, old oak for reclamation is very difficult to get hold of and VERY expensive when it is available, so we buy in kiln dried sawn oak direct from France and machine it ourselves. Since then we have done other hardwood flooring to order (mostly elm and ash) but we only stock oak at present. And in order to satisfy demand for old oak we artificially age new oak using a water and ammonia based stain which we have specially prepared for us. Look at the flooring page for pictures of artificially aged oak floors (and doors!)
In addition to buying and selling antique pine, we make every conceivable type and style of door (and frame) from reclaimed pine and new oak, we supply and lay reclaimed pine and new oak floors and we make bespoke furniture from reclaimed pine or new oak.
